Google Plus Sparks Rumours & Myths

Sparks are going to be the next big “in thing” for getting traffic to your latest content. However exactly what sparks are and where they come from is still open to controversy. Here’s a quick look at some of the current rumours and myths making the rounds:

Rumours:

  • Higher traffic, more linkbacks and more +1s increase your chance of ranking for popular sparks.

Myths:

  • You can only get ranked in Sparks if you’re content is a news site.
  • You can only get ranked by Sparks if your site has authority and good ranking.
  • You need to have lots of traffic, likes or +1s to get ranked in sparks.
Yes, these two are complete myths. I’ve ranked on sparks with a PR N/A site which had autoposts only.

How do I add my site or page to Google Plus Sparks?

Sparks are the easy way to see what’s happening in the world right now – based on any topic you wish. You can go as broad as “Summer” or be more specific with a term like “Texas Pizza Shops”.

Of course sparks are a great way to find out what’s happening, but they’re also another great promotion tool for people who want more exposure for their new (and therefore not highly ranked) content.

So how do you get your content in Google sparks? Well despite the hype, it’s not that hard.

Google Sparks grabs content based on two main things:

  1. Age – The more recent the item is, the closer to the top of the page it will appear.
  2. Relevance – How relevant is the new item to the subject the spark page is about?
So based on this the single most important factor would obviously be:
  • Getting your new article or post indexed by Google as fast as possible. I won’t tell you how to do that- if you’re already an online publisher then you’ll know about bookmarking, backlinks and pings.
The second most important factor is obvious as well:
  • If you want your page ranked for a specific spark topic, make sure you SEO for that topic. Include that spark topic where ever you can, the same as you would with any keyword. Of course if you’re not bothered what spark you rank for right now, just stick with the first step.
There is another way to get your site ranked in Google sparks, although well how well this works has not been confirmed. Simply post a link to your site, and the more +1s you get from your circle, the more chance you have of your site ranking in sparks.
